My friends over at RISING Church in GA hosted a family-fun Christmas event that was a huge hit with the whole church. They rented out the local skate rink from 6-8 PM on a Sunday evening for a “Rock N Roll” Christmas Party!
They hosted a special night for their entire church family to start off the Christmas season with some good old fashioned fun! With desserts, the concession stand, and extra activities for all ages, families could join them for an evening of laughter and Christmas-themed fellowship. They had an ornament craft that families could make together or as individuals, Christmas Trivia elimination, themed skates, a rock-n-roll Christmas cake for all to enjoy, and there was even a Frozen sing-along.
Lori, the Associate Pastor at RISING Church, had this to say about the evening and what she learned from it:
“The Rock N Roll Christmas Party was so much fun! It was so joyful to watch all the generations interact. The Dads were over the top skating geeks and everyone ate it up – especially the kids. So many students came and skated with kids and adults in conversation and laughter. Some people came out just to be social and went out onto the rink with no skates to do the hokey pokey!”
“At Christmastime we are supposed to think out of the box because that certainly was what God did when He sent us Jesus. We can take an ordinary activity and put CHRISTmas in it, and it can be effective and cool.”
So I encourage you, KidMin leader, to think outside the box this Christmas season. Take an ordinary activity, find a way to give it a Christmas theme, and use it to bring generations together in the name of Jesus and Christmas cheer.
