Ministry has a way of tugging us in a hundred directions at once. Some days you’re dreaming big, praying big, and planning big. Other days, you’re digging through the weeds just trying to pull the details, supplies, and volunteers together for Sunday. And most days? You’re doing both at the exact same time.
Both the big picture and the details matter. Both are valuable. Both are part of how God wired you to lead. But living in the tension between the two can leave you feeling stretched thin, scattered, or stuck in survival mode.
So how can we balance both? Here are 3 steps to start with:
- Evaluate and rearrange your time. Take a hard look at where your time is actually going each week. Are you spending most of it reacting to urgent tasks, or are you carving out space for the things that matter most in the long run? Shifting your schedule to prioritize both dreaming and doing can help you feel more in control instead of constantly putting out fires. Even small adjustments, like blocking out a single hour for planning or prayer, can make a big difference.
- Develop routines and habits. When your weekly rhythms are clear, the small details start taking care of themselves, and you have mental space for vision and strategy. Habits like prepping supplies on the same day each week or scheduling volunteer check-ins consistently create stability, so you’re not scrambling at the last minute. Over time, these habits reduce stress and give you more room to focus on the bigger picture.
- Know the signs of burnout. Leadership in children’s ministry is a marathon, not a sprint, and ignoring burnout only makes the tension between dreaming and doing feel heavier. Watch for warning signs like constant exhaustion, irritability, or feeling like nothing you do is enough. Recognizing these early gives you the chance to rest, reset, and get back to leading with energy and purpose. Protecting your well-being isn’t selfish; it’s part of leading well.
