The Advent season is all about waiting and preparing. Even if your church doesn’t lean into the traditional Advent themes of hope, peace, joy, and love, this season gives us a powerful opportunity to help kids (and ourselves) slow down and focus on Jesus.

But let’s be honest. Slowing down in December feels nearly impossible. Between Christmas programs, family gatherings, school events, and sugar-fueled excitement, kids (and adults) are moving at full speed.

That’s why Advent matters. It invites us to pause, breathe, and remember what we’re really celebrating.

So how can we help kids embrace that slower rhythm of waiting and preparing their hearts for Jesus? Here are a few simple ways to help them do just that:

  1. Talk About Waiting – Kids don’t love waiting (and honestly who does?). But waiting is something God uses to grow our hearts. Share stories from Scripture where God’s people had to wait, and connect them to how we wait for Jesus’ birth at Christmas. The story of Simeon and Anna (Luke 2:25–38) is a great place to start!
  2. Create Moments of Quiet – In a season full of noise and activity, intentionally create quiet moments in your ministry space and schedule. Light a candle (or use a digital Advent wreath to avoid open flame around kids) and sit in silence for 30 seconds. Read a short prayer or a verse about peace. Be intentional with a worship response time after your lessons in December. These small, sacred pauses teach kids that God often speaks in stillness.
  3. Make Room for Jesus – Encourage kids to “make room” for Jesus in their hearts and homes. That might mean setting aside time to pray, showing kindness to others, or choosing gratitude instead of greed. You could even do a simple activity where kids clean out a “manger” (a small box or basket) and talk about preparing a place for Jesus in their hearts.
  4. Focus on the Story, Not the Stuff – Kids are surrounded by messages about gifts and decorations. Take time each week to draw their attention back to the story of Jesus, His promise, His coming, and His love for them. Whether through a family devotional, a ministry countdown, or a storytelling activity, keep the focus on what truly matters.

Advent gives us the gift of preparation. It reminds us that Christmas isn’t just one day. It’s the celebration of a Savior we’ve been waiting for. When we slow down and help kids do the same, we create space for kids to prepare their hearts and minds for the coming King.
