Technology continues to expand and make our lives easier as ministry leaders. The latest advancement includes AI chatbots like ChatGPT and Google’s Bard. When I asked ChatGPT to define itself and its capabilities, it responded: “ChatGPT is an advanced language model developed by OpenAI. It uses artificial intelligence to generate human-like text responses based on the prompts it receives. Essentially, it’s a computer program that can have text-based conversations with users, providing information, answering questions, and engaging in discussions on a wide range of topics. Its purpose is to assist users in various tasks, from finding information to creative writing, and more.”
By using an AI chatbot like ChatGPT or Google’s Bard, leaders can cut their email-writing time in half, streamline the research process, and explore creative series titles. While I recommend applying discernment and discretion in the way we utilize AI in our writings (I wouldn’t ask it to write a whole lesson or prayer for, though it can do that), here are 9 ways to use an AI chatbot like ChatGPT in your children’s ministry:
- Website copy – Chatbots can assist with website copy by generating content that is informative, engaging, and SEO-friendly. This can help increase website traffic and improve user engagement.
- Social Media captions – Chatbots can help create social media captions that are catchy and attention-grabbing. This can help increase social media engagement and drive more traffic to your website.
- Event promotion – Chatbots can assist with event promotion by generating copy that is persuasive and informative. They can even write the event descriptions for you that you can use in promoting the event online and in person.
- Email-writing – Need an email that encourages parents to have faith conversations at home or that celebrates new kindergarteners? Chatbots can help draft those emails for you!
- Curriculum Prep – If you write your own curriculum, chatbots can help generate compelling titles and overviews for sermon series, Bible studies, or other events. By sharing the theme of a series with the chatbot, it can generate related topics, catchy titles, and even possible Scripture passages or an outline of the series. While I don’t recommend that you allow AI to write your entire series for you, it can offer a great place to start with a structure and overview.
- Creating discussion questions for small groups – Simply share the lesson with the chatbot and ask it to create small group questions for kids. Then use these discussion questions to share with parents to use at home, or ask the questions in your ministry setting.
- Answering tough questions – If you work with kids long, you know they have a lot of questions. Chatbots can be programmed to provide concise and accurate answers to tough questions on sensitive topics. Of course, always use discernment when sharing the answers provided.
- Research – Need to find Bible verses focusing on a particular topic? Want to know about possible resources around parenting special needs kids? Asking a chatbot for help can streamline your research process. Just be aware that it often does not provide sources for its research.
- Clean up your writing – Chatbots can even help improve the quality of your writing by identifying grammar and spelling errors, suggesting revisions, and providing feedback on style and tone.
AI chatbots like ChatGPT can be powerful tools for leaders in a variety of tasks. The possibilities are endless when it comes to communicating effectively in our digital world, and smart leaders will take advantage of the tools technology makes available. So go ahead, spend some time today exploring what these new chatbots can do and dream about how to make your life easier as a ministry leader.
