In children’s ministry, there are a few lessons you learn pretty quickly:

  1. Saturday-night volunteer call-outs are going to happen (so plan for them and don’t let them wreck your weekend).
  2. The check-in printers will die at the worst possible moment (right before the Sunday morning rush).
  3. And if you bring out the glitter, you will still be finding it in the carpet six months later.

But when it comes to partnering with parents, there’s one lesson that matters most: Consistent is better than flashy.

Parents don’t need one more giant, blown-out event from you (though those are great when they’re intentional). They don’t need the perfectly polished devotional resource that took you weeks to design and put together. They don’t even need a “wow” moment every single Sunday. What parents really need is simple, steady encouragement that shows them you are in their corner and on their team.

I’m not saying events and devotionals are bad. They can be powerful connection points, and Deeper KidMin can even help make them easier for you with intentional family events and ready-to-share family devotions. But these events and resources should support your ministry’s consistency, not replace it.

Think about it like this. If you throw a bucket of water on a rock, nothing really happens. But a steady drip of water, over time, can cut a trail through even the hardest stone. The same is true in our ministries.

Remember: flashy moments grab attention for a short time, but consistency builds trust for the long haul.

  • A quick conversation at pick-up.
  • A weekly social media post with one question they can ask their kids.
  • A short prayer texted to a parent before a big life transition.

Those things might not seem like much. They probably won’t make it into the church newsletter. But repeated over weeks, months, and years, they create a foundation of trust that no big event could ever replace.

So let’s choose the steady drip of encouragement, connection, and presence when it comes to partnering with parents. Because at the end of the day, what parents need most from your ministry is not more flash and stuff and events on their calendars. What they need most is your consistency.

And if you want practical ways to build that consistency with families, join us for our next online workshop all about Partnering with Parents! Together we’ll explore how to move from frustration to fruitfulness by creating sustainable, consistent strategies that actually work with today’s parents. Learn more and save your spot here. Can’t make it live? No worries! Your registration includes access to the replay link, which we’ll send out the afternoon after the live online event.
