As Florida and the southeast prepare for another hurricane to hit land in the next day or two, you may be wondering how you can best support the kids and families in your ministry as parents navigate talking with their kids about the hurricane(s) or experiencing them first-hand.
Stephanie Cline, a children’s minister in the Orlando, FL area, showed me the message she shared with her kids and families to support and encourage them as they prepare for the hurricane to hit. I thought it was full of great wisdom and reminders, even for those of us who may not be directly in the hurricane’s path:
Good afternoon, families! We are praying for you as you prepare today and tomorrow for Hurricane Milton. I know these times can seem scary and unsure. My flesh wants to focus on the temporary and unknown but I am reminded of Philippians 4:8, “Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.” Below are some ways to help you navigate this storm with your children.
- Media – I know that you will need to listen to updates for weather, etc., but be mindful of where your children are during this moment. Many news and media platforms like to give fear rather than the facts. Children may not be able to process what they are hearing.
- Power outage – If the power goes out at your house, have board games, coloring books, books, etc. readily available. This is also a great time to discuss other countries that may not have power ever – ours will come back on eventually.
- Sound machine – Even if this storm does not happen at night, have a sound machine on to help cover the outside noises. Your kids might not feel safe sleeping in their bedrooms this week. If that is the case, build a fort in a center room and have a fun sleepover as a family!
- Serving – After the storm and after you have evaluated your own property, take your children on a walk around the neighborhood and ask your neighbors if they need help with anything. Our church may even need help moving branches, etc. on Friday.
- Worship/Read the Bible/Pray – I know you may not feel like it in these moments, but there is never a bad time to pray and worship God. God still hears our prayers. Focusing our eyes on God during this storm helps calm the anxiety nerves. Lead your kids to pray and read the Bible during these times. Help them focus their attention on God.
- God is sovereign over all – I know this is easier said than done because my own sin nature wants to fear the unknown. However, remind your children that we do not have to fear. God is in control of the weather and nature – His power is abundant! If there is ever a time that you feel overwhelmed in the next few days, remove yourself in a separate, but safe, area of the house and spend time in prayer. Kids will feed off your energy, so you want to remain as calm as possible.
I know there are many more ways you can help your children during these moments! You all are amazing parents!! Please know we are praying for you during this week! If there is anything you need from us, please do not hesitate to reach out! I love being your children’s minister!
Thank you, Stephanie, for letting me share your wisdom and encouragement, and we are praying for all those still recovering from Hurricane Helene and all those who will be affected by Hurricane Milton.
