5 Ways to Start the School Year Strong in Your Children’s Ministry

Backpacks are packed, first-day-of-school outfits are purchased, and everyone’s trying to get back into a routine after the summer, which means it’s officially back-to-school season!

Whether you’re pumped for a fresh start or still mourning the end of summer fun, now is the perfect time to refocus, refresh, and relaunch your ministry for a brand-new year.

Here are 5 ways to start the school year strong in your children’s ministry:

1. Get Organized (Before the Sunday Morning Scramble Hits) – From updated rosters to curriculum plans to stocked classrooms, a little prep now will save you a ton of stress later. Take time to update parent contact info, allergy alerts, and class lists. Make sure your check-in system is ready to go for new families. Clean out all those VBS supplies from your office, and take a look at your overall calendar to figure out how to keep yourself organized too.
2. Equip Your Volunteers for a New Season – Your volunteers are showing up every week ready to serve, and it’s your responsibility as a leader to make sure they’re equipped to lead! Host a training, cast vision, and refresh everyone on policies, safety protocols, and classroom management tips.
3. Make Kids Feel Seen & Celebrated – Back-to-school season can bring mixed feelings for kids. Create welcoming environments that help kids feel known, loved, and excited to be at church. Learn their names, celebrate their milestones, and remind them they belong.
4. Launch with Something Fun + Intentional – Kick off the year with an event, theme, or teaching series that helps kids connect with their leaders, each other, and God’s Word. Whether it’s a party, a prayer emphasis, or a school-supply drive, use this season as a launchpad for deeper ministry. 5. Cover Everything in Prayer, including your local schools! – Before diving into the rosters and schedules and supply bins, begin with prayer. Pray for your kids, families, volunteers, and for God’s presence to move through every hallway and classroom this year.
