I’m so excited for our Canva Confidence online workshop happening this Thursday, August 20 as we dive into the basic principles of good design, discover time-saving Canva features, and create ministry resources you can actually use right away. (Save your spot for the workshop here). We’ve partnered with Church Visuals for this workshop, and we’re excited to share a guest blog post from them this week…
Kids are visual learners, and every visual is communicating something, whether you intended it to or not.
As ministry leaders, we have the greatest message ever told. Our job isn’t to entertain kids; it’s to communicate the Gospel as clearly as possible. Quality visuals help remove distractions so kids can focus on what matters most: Jesus.
Whether you’re creating graphics in Canva or another design program, I want to give you seven really easy, practical things that will instantly improve your designs.
1. Clarity Is More Important Than Creativity – One of the biggest mistakes beginners make is trying to make something “look cool.” Instead, ask:
- Can someone understand this graphic in five seconds?
- Is the most important information the easiest thing to see?
- Would a first-time family know exactly the information you want to convey and the call to action you want them to take?
A clear design will always outperform a clever one.
2. Keep It Simple – Don’t try to communicate everything at once. Choose one message. One event. One Bible point. If everything is bold, colorful, and oversized, nothing stands out. Great design gives people one thing to focus on.
3. Make It Easy to Read – If parents or volunteers have to work to read your graphic, they’ll stop trying. Choose clean fonts. Use strong contrast between your text and background. Avoid putting long paragraphs on a slide. The easier it is to read, the better it communicates.
4. Use High-Quality Images – Nothing makes a graphic feel amateur faster than blurry, pixelated, or stretched images. Whenever possible, use high-resolution photos or design elements. Here are a few simple rules to follow:
- Don’t enlarge an image beyond its original size. If a photo is only 800×600 pixels, stretching it to fill a large slide or social graphic will make it blurry and pixelated.
- Start with the correct dimensions. Design your graphic at the size it will actually be displayed. For example:
- Social media: 1080×1350 pixels
- Instagram Stories/Reels: 1080×1920 pixels
- Presentation slides for your screens: 1920×1080 pixels (or known as 16:9)
- Maintain the image’s proportions. Hold Shift (or use Canva’s corner resize handles) so the image doesn’t become unnaturally tall or wide.
- When in doubt, use larger images. It’s much better to shrink a high-resolution image than to enlarge a small one.
5. Be Consistent – You don’t need a brand-new style every Sunday. Use the same colors, fonts, and overall look throughout your ministry. Consistency builds trust and helps families immediately recognize your Kids Ministry.
6. Leave Some Empty Space – Not every inch of your design needs to be filled. Professional designers intentionally leave room around text and graphics. That “empty” space actually helps people notice what’s most important. Less clutter almost always means better communication.
7. Remember Why You’re Designing – Your goal isn’t compliments. Your goal is ministry. The best graphics don’t make people say, “That’s a cool design.” They help people understand the message more quickly. Every piece of visual media is another opportunity to point kids and families toward Jesus in a clear and compelling way. As you continue learning design software like Canva, don’t focus on becoming a professional designer overnight. Focus on becoming a better communicator. When your visuals communicate clearly, your ministry can spend less time fighting distractions and more time discipling kids.
Focus on your Calling
Of course, not every Kids Ministry leader has the time to become a graphic designer, and that’s okay. Learning tools like Canva is a great investment, but sometimes your schedule is already full of lesson planning, volunteer coordination, parent communication, and caring for kids.
If you’d rather spend your time leading ministry than designing graphics, Church Visuals is here to help.
We provide thousands of ready-made graphics and videos you can customize in minutes, along with an experienced creative team that can design custom graphics and videos for your church.
Whether you need a quick social media graphic or a fully branded curriculum, our goal is simple: We design so you can disciple.
Thank you for faithfully serving the next generation. Every lesson you teach, every volunteer you encourage, every event you plan, and every visual you create is another opportunity to point a child toward Jesus.
Keep investing in excellence, keep communicating the Gospel clearly, and trust that God will use your faithfulness to make an eternal impact.
