10 Tips for Planning the Christmas Season in Children’s Ministry
The Christmas season in children’s ministry is full of opportunity and activity. Between Christmas programs, family events, Advent lessons, and volunteer appreciation, it can feel like there’s always more to do.
But what if this Christmas you could lead from a place of peace instead of pressure? Here are some practical tips to help you prepare to celebrate the birth of Jesus with your kids and families, and join us on November 13 for an online workshop all about making Christmas manageable and meaningful in your kidmin.
1. Start early.
Christmas always comes on the same day every year, but it still somehow manages to sneak up on us. The earlier you start planning, the more freedom you’ll have to stay organized and calm once December arrives. Get your dates on the calendar now, order supplies, and communicate early with families and volunteers.
2. Keep your “why” at the center.
Before you plan events or activities, take time to pray and clarify your purpose. Is your goal to reach new families, create space for worship, or help kids understand the gift of Jesus? Once you know your “why,” it becomes easier to plan with focus and say no to things that don’t fit.
3. Simplify your calendar and your resources.
You don’t have to do everything. Choose a few things to do well instead of filling every weekend. Reuse decorations, repurpose supplies, and rely on resources that make preparation easier. Simple can still be meaningful.
4. Help families be intentional at home.
Christmas is a great time to equip parents to lead their kids spiritually. Families are already celebrating and making memories together, and you can help them make those moments meaningful. Share a take-home Advent calendar, a Christmas devotion, or a “Countdown to Christmas” activity that points families back to Jesus. When you help parents bring faith into their homes, your ministry impact grows. Find our favorite family Christmas resources here.
5. Lean into Advent.
Don’t let Advent get lost in the busy schedule. This season of anticipation gives kids and families time to prepare their hearts and experience the wonder of God’s promise fulfilled. Whether through a churchwide Advent event or a simple weekly moment in kids ministry, Advent can help everyone slow down and focus on Jesus. Find more Advent resources here!
6. Involve kids in worship and storytelling.
Kids remember what they do, not just what they hear. Invite them to participate in the Christmas story by reading Scripture, acting in a nativity, singing in worship, or leading a prayer. When kids take part, the story of Jesus’ birth becomes personal and memorable. (Psst – in our online workshop happening on November 13, one of the things we’ll talk about is creative ways to teach the Christmas story with kids! Learn more and save your seat here!)
7. Communicate early and clearly.
Parents’ calendars fill up fast this time of year. Send event details early, include all the important information, and share reminders in multiple ways. Consistent communication helps families feel confident and prepared.
8. Care for your volunteers.
Your volunteers give so much of their time and energy during the Christmas season. Take time to show your appreciation through a note, a small gift, or a simple volunteer gathering. A thankful leader helps create a joyful team. Find Christmas or holiday-themed volunteer appreciation gift ideas here.
9. Plan rest for yourself and your family.
The Christmas season can take a lot out of you and your loved ones. Schedule time now for rest and renewal in December and after Christmas. Make a plan to spend intentional time with your family just like you make intentional time for the families in your ministry. Protect a Sabbath day, take a weekend off, or plan time to recharge. Healthy ministry starts with a healthy leader.
10. Make space for wonder.
Create moments that allow kids to pause and reflect. They don’t need more noise or activity. They need time to experience the awe of God with us. Let the story of Jesus’ birth capture their hearts and yours again this year. This Christmas series and this Christmas series both include worship response times built into the lesson!
